Red Earth:
Moundville
Pottery Gathering and Expo
June 15-18, 2005
General
Information
| WHAT: |
Fusing
Red Earth
is an annual gathering and expo of people interested in southeastern
Indian pottery, past and present. Program features are open
discussions, a presentation on prehistoric ceramics, viewing
institutional collections of prehistoric and historic indigenous
ceramics and exhibiting and demonstrating the art of Southeastern
Indian pottery.
|
| WHO: |
Potters,
both native and non-native, doing traditional, contemporary
or replication work, are joining scholars, museum people and
others to brainstorm and network while sharing their knowledge
of the art, technology and evolution of ceramics in the Southeast.
|
| WHY: |
Much
of the pottery and other art works produced by the people
originally inhabiting North American Southeast was and/or
is every bit as spectacular as that created by the southwestern
tribes. Unfortunately, the cultural art world’s primary
focus is still on southwestern native art.
A major
step in making others aware of the excellence of these ceramics
is to bring together potters whose work is influenced by Southeastern
Indians. Additionally, scholars, students and others interested
in the art have much to contribute to everyone’s overall
knowledge of the art. Ultimately, this and future gatherings
will result in a traveling pottery exhibition that presents
Southeastern Indian ceramics in a continuum from the first
fiber tempered ware to what modern artists are creating today.
